Three days a week I watch football. During every single game I see the commercial for nomore.org. They show player after player saying "No More not my business... I'm sure they'll work it out... but he said he was sorry, NO MORE." It should be no surprise that the NFL is taking a stand against domestic violence. After all the bad press with Ray Rice hitting his wife, and then accusations against Arian Peterson abusing his child, the NFL is at risk of having the image of the overall establishment damaged. Most people understand that you can't judge all football players by the actions of a few. However, like any company with a dishonest employee, punishment must be swift and sure in order for the public to separate the actions of one from the whole. With the events coming out so close to one another, there is an even greater possibility for people to look at the NFL as being easy on violent crimes.
The choice to join NOMORE.org was a wise one for the NFL to make. It will not only tell the world that the NFL stands against domestic violence, but it will also shine a light on men who are the opposite of those appearing in the news lately. They are generating good press for the few chosen men who are "passionate and demonstrative about their beliefs" and who "are confident in their manhood and know that women should be respected and revered, and they are not afraid to take a stand for what they believe." There is no smarter way that they could have approached a mountain of bad press about the poor choices of a few players.

This post totally relates to my degree in Sport Administration. Thank you for sharing – it was a very interesting read! I love that the NFL took a proactive PR approach to addressing issues concerning domestic violence within the organization. I completely agree that joining the NOMORE.org was one of the best ways to approach such a negative string of events connected with some of their athletes. It clearly communicates that the NFL does not condone domestic violence, nor will they stand by without taking action. It is unfortunate that the NFL is receiving the negative attention, when it is the actions of the athletes that should be addressed and dealt with on a personal level.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of you. When I was thinking about the domestic violence that has been prevalent from the NFL as in the press lately, I did confuse the two players. This was because their actions became public news so close together. As I don't watch much football, but realize it is such an aggressive sport, I was very impressed with the commercial for nomore.org that I saw soon after. The PR response of this large company, the NFL, was quite outstanding. It made me realize that not all NFL players have this blatant disrespect for others, and I was moved to watch more than just the commercial. It was an excellent PR strategy that definitely saved the NFL.
ReplyDeleteI feel this is a great way for the NFL to announce it's stance on domestic violence and abuse. With several national league players in various sports making the news this has become an increasingly hot topic. It is refreshing to see that the NFL was not afraid to take a stance and say that they do not condone this type of behavior. I also feel that the NFL got some of the blowback from these players mistakes and may have had consumers questioning their credibility. This is a great way to let the consumers know they are aware of it, against it, and will take necessary measures to keep it from happening.
ReplyDeleteBrandy, great choice of topic. I have noticed the same commercials and I truly think this was a great move for the NFL as they were coming under some serious scrutiny leading upto the Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson trials. Looking at it in a perspective of PR for the NFL it shows they are not scared to take a stance against domestic violence and while the NFL's reputation may have been hindered by the recent news of violence among players I think the no more.org stance has somewhat gave them a new face and reputation. This may open the door for other sports to start doing something similar. This just shows that the NFL can be an organization to look up to.
ReplyDeleteI am agree with your post, it is a real nice post. The purpose of public relations is to establish a good image of the organization, in order to let people know, understand, accept and agree with the organization, finally let people from the beginning of passive understanding the organization to take the initiative to close to organization. NFL join NOMORE.org is a good choice to help them to built a good image in public, their PR term make a good choice.
