Looking into the news on the PRSSA website I found an
interesting article about the University of Oklahoma who conducted some
research on the people of Oklahoma, in order to find out what attracts
Americans to visiting places in Germany like Erfurt. I thought this would be an
important article showing how students conducted surveys and interviews to do
their research and the students that had the best data would present it in
Germany. This gave the students a lot of experience and they mentioned how you
can’t teach this business setting in a class room which I couldn't agree more,
especially with the different background people have in different countries.
This could be some real experience and if you’re looking at being with a firm that
is internationally focused, then it could be a good start to developing those
much needed skills that cannot be taught.
I wanted to bring this into consideration for the group,
because of how research is the first step towards finding this answer. Then
doing the next steps in order to then present data to the city marketing
department in Erfurt. I think many public relation firms are doing this because
they want to know how to bring income into a location or a certain business.
They need to know, what attracts the tourists that makes them want to go back
or go there in the first place. In the book the section that I feel is
important to mention is defining audiences and segmenting on page 92 because it
explains how gathering information about demographics, lifestyles and characteristics
help. I believe also this is the reason why they used interviews and surveys
instead of a simple questionnaire. These tools helped find beyond the
information and onto the reasons behind that decision.
Thank you for sharing this article with me, I like reading this article. I totally agree with everything what you talked in this blog. I want to talk about a little about why people like using interviews rather than simple questionnaire. The reason is that I think the interview is a two-way communication, I can face to face to talk with my audience, I can use many ways to make sure my audiences to receive information, make sure my audiences understanding, such as tone of vice, body language and eye contact. This is a best way to give my audiences information and gain the feedback information shortly.
ReplyDeleteIn the articles what I found most interesting was how the original research lead to more research for the students. After the students “identified the most useful information” they then “conducted additional research.” It is important to remember, as a PR professional, that when conducting research many times the original question leads to more questions. For example, when looking for which audience to target and who is your passive audience you may find that your question leads you to more questions, which are narrower and more direct. This process will help you to identify and specify research. Thanks for sharing Sam!
ReplyDeleteIt's very important to do research about any kind of topic when you conduct a survey/interview. You be knowledgeable on the topic so if you get asked questions about a certain thing you will have a better understanding on your topic. The students must realize that it's very important to do research. I like how you related this article to the book. Students must gather information and do some research Germany's lifestyles. I agree, when you said you can't teach a business setting in just the classroom you need to apply that into the real world with students. Overall good post Sam!!
ReplyDeleteThis was a great article to use since it was not just about Public Relations, but also about Public Relations students, like us. What a great opportunity these Oklahoma students had in their “Dream” program. They were able to get very real world experience and beyond what they concluded and found in their research they had to be able to present their campaign to a different culture. These cultural barriers are differences are becoming very important to be aware of as companies are becoming more and more integrated with other countries. Globalization of industries and companies has become more prevalent with the advancement of technology, which makes it easier to more seamlessly run multinational organizations.
