The article I found in the news is from
Bloomberg, a website that gives updates and the latest news in the
business world. One Public Relations
article in particular caught my eye, its title, “Companies Don’t Care Anymore
That You Don’t Care Anymore About This Sustainability Thing.” Author Eric
Roston begins the article by stating that many people “dismiss corporate
sustainability as empty green PR.”
Meaning, that even though there are definitely those people out there
who are searching out “green” conscious companies and giving them their
business, there are still many people who find much of what they hear about
sustainable companies to be a ploy for their business. Or people who do not care either way
whether a company is environmentally conscious or not as long as the product is cheap, convenient, or aesthetically pleasing.
However,
according to the article many companies still turn to environmentally friendly
or sustainable options anyway, to the degree that the decision would be good
for the shareholders. From a PR perspective the PR professional’s goal is to shed the company in its best light, regardless of trying
to worry about whether or not the decision would entice people into buying the companies products and services. If one product is from a company you know to be environmentally friendly, are you more likely to buy it than a competitors brand? Or do you believe some companies only "talk the talk" of environmental sustainability, but don't "walk the walk?"
This is a very nice post, I like your topic very much. If a product if from a company I know to be environmentally friendly and care about sustainable, my answer is yes. i will buy it more than its competitors brand. I will become a fan of that company, because I think that environment is very important to people, if a company respect and friendly to environment, then I will respect and support this company.
ReplyDeleteKatie, I really like this post about environmental companies caring for sustainability. Although I must agree with the article and say how I don't take into consideration if the company is environmentally conscious or not. I care about the quality and the cost of the product. If a company is involved in environmentally friendly activity it is a plus and some people will go for the product that has business like this. I think it is a growing ploy for businesses and over time it is going to be important to have, but right now the majority of people is going to adopt the cheaper option.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great topic of increasing importance to companies and the PR professional. Their are many reason a company should think about becoming environmentally friendly. It can help cut costs, increase efficiency, and increase productivity/sales.Today many are finding reasons to jump on the "Green Bandwagon". If you can save money then Why not?
ReplyDeleteAs a consumer I do not really actually look and seek out only those companies that sell environmentally safe products. I do find that often I am suspicious of whether a company is actually trying to help the environment or just trying to look good. It does however make me evaluate companies more as I feel it is an increasingly important issue and I feel I should become more aware of companies pursuing these roles.
I'd like to answer your question "If one product is from a company you know to be environmentally friendly, are you more likely to buy it than a competitors brand? Or do you believe some companies only "talk the talk" of environmental sustainability, but don't "walk the walk?"
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely choose an environmentally friendly product over one that is not. However, we can't pretend like cost isn't a factor. I won't buy products that are "green" if it costs 3 times as much as any alternative. If were are reusing, re-purposing and recycling why is it so expensive? I can't imagine I'm the only one who feels this way. If we are really going to create a truly sustainable plant we can't expect people to shell out big bucks to do it because that just won't happen.
I have been caught in the "green" phase as much as the next person. I used to get lured in because I felt shopping from these companies was my way of doing my part to conserve the environment. But I was recently doing research for another class and it left me thinking what it really means to be environmentally friendly. Upon this research I also found that many of us, consumers and businesses alike just don't care anymore. The way that businesses have unrightfully labled themselves green have cause us as consumers to be skeptical. If it is convinent for us, it is convinient for them. But otherwise as you stated. We Dont Care.
